What does productivity mean?
Posts tagged with multilingual are available in different languages. They will serve as exercises to express my thoughts in different ways. It’s a better alternative than having separate translations inside the same post.
After reading my fair share of productivity books on focus, habits, etc., I began to question what productivity really means.
Productivity is a broad subject, so allow me to define it as question:
“In environment X focusing on task Y, how efficient will I be at producing Z?”
Finding answers to the above is limitless. For starters, the environment X is variable. For example, if you’re a person who likes quiet spaces, you wouldn’t fare well in loud ones. Furthermore, the type of task Y requires distinct kinds of focus; material above your skill level creates friction in starting or continuing tasks. Lastly, there are your expected results to consider: what Z will you gain from doing Y?
Frankly, there are too many variables to control, which is why it’s important to define productivity on your terms, that is, answer the question above in your way.
For me, productivity means sitting down and working in a safe mental space that pushes me forwards. Rather than overthinking fancy schedules, it’s about being non-judgemental and trusting myself to work well.
For context, I realized I’m someone who tends to be hard on themselves which directly influences my focus in carrying out tasks. Thus, I value creating an internal space where I concentrate without judging myself on efficiency or ability. If I’m debugging a piece of code or practicing a tough chord on guitar, I’ll dampen my negativity if I’m unable to debug or play the chord in timely fashion. Figuratively, I create mental weight when I expect too much of myself, which leads to self-blame or feeling irrationally rushed to complete tasks.
Learning to pace my work is also important. Sure, I set timers and slots in my schedule, but when I’m stuck on a task and feel pressured — how should I react? How should I judge that I’ve worked enough to ask for help? Sometimes, I benefit more from taking breaks than rushing for answers, even when I think I’m so close to cracking it.1.. Therefore, it becomes a matter of trusting my judgement and assessing the timing to stop or continue what I’m doing.
It’s worth experimenting what works for you, and to be honest about it. Granted, being consistent in your methods is a beast in its own right, because daily events governs priorities and influences mood. My takeway for you is to take time to apply what you’ve read to your own world without fretting over the optimal conditions regarding productivity.
